Cheer Squad

The cheer squad at Cherokee High School is made up of girls from grades 7-12. In order to be a cheerleader at CHS you must try out in front of a panel of judges, get high recommendations from your teachers, and have a grade of C or above in all classes. The cheerleaders at CHS cheer at all football and basketball games, and put on pep rallies, bonfires, and other community events. 

The 2021-2022 CHS cheer squad competed in 3 cheer competitions: 

  • Space Center Regional- Huntsville, AL: 6th place overall, bid to Nationals in Orlando, FL. 
  • AHSAA State Qualifier-Huntsville, AL: bid to state competition in Birmingham, AL 
  • AHSAA State Finals- Birmingham, AL: 3rd place in 1A-2A Gameday

Keri Newton

Hello! My name is Keri Winchester Newton. I teach 7th-9th grade special education at Cherokee High School and coach the varsity cheerleaders. 

I graduated from Cherokee in 2009. I was a cheerleader at Northwest Shoals Community College for 2 years and graduated with an associates degree in elementary education in 2012. I went on to the University of North Alabama where I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor's  degree in Elementary Education in 2015. I also completed my masters degree in 2018 in Special Education from the University of North Alabama. 

I am married to Jake Newton, who is a CVIUC nurse at North Alabama Medical Center. We have one daughter, Elliott, who is 2 years old.
